Yes, Bogotá is worth visiting

August 9, 2018

When people travel to Colombia, they usually plan to see Cartagena and Medellín, only adding Bogotá if it fits into their itinerary since it’s “just another city.” Despite what might be common opinion, I can attest that Bogotá is worth a visit. Just be sure to pack clothes for the colder weather and be smart at night (as the Colombians say, “no dar papaya!”) and you’ll be able fully enjoy the Colombian capitol.

Let’s Speak Spanish: Colombian Expressions

July 26, 2018

If you’re traveling to Colombia, you may be wondering, What’s Spanish in Colombia like?

Colombian Spanish is not too different from the Spanish in other parts of Latin America or even Spain. However, the country has a rich diversity of dialects, ranging from the costeño dialect near the northern Caribbean coast, the paisa dialect in Antioquia (Medellín), to the rolo dialect around Bogotá. I personally was surprised to learn that certain parts of Colombia speak Spanish similar to what you’d hear in Argentina, with the use of vos and the distinct pronunciation of words with the double “l.” Pro tip: “Medellín” is pronounced with a “j” sound, like “Mede-gene“!

While Colombia has no standard dialect, you’ll probably hear the same set of expressions throughout the country. Some of these expressions truly reflect the hospitality of the Colombian people.

How to Hike Valle del Cocora

June 21, 2018

Valle del Cocora (Cocora Valley) is located in Salento, Colombia. It’s known for its wax trees — tall and skinny trees that look like something straight out of Dr. Seuss. The view is stunning, but the hike isn’t for the faint of heart. The full loop through the valley is about a 5-hour excursion through lots of mud (mixed with horse poop) and plenty of uphill trekking. Your shoes and clothes will get dirty and you might slip if you’re not careful.

Exploring Salento, Colombia

June 18, 2018

Salento, Colombia is a charming town located in the Eje Cafetero (Colombia’s coffee region). It’s the perfect escape from the city life in Cartagena and Medellín. We spent four days out in nature, enjoying the breathtaking landscape, and sipping delicious coffee. Quite honestly, it was one of my favorite cities during my backpacking adventure.
